The Lord Is My Light

The small wonder

There is a particular kind of peace in the first light of the day.

It comes quietly. It slips around the edge of the curtain. It reaches across the floor. It finds the familiar things in the room and lets us see them again: a chair, a table, a book left open, a cup waiting to be filled.

For a few moments the room is the same room it was the night before. Yet light has changed how we see it.

Most of us do not stop to notice this. We turn on a lamp, check the time, reach for the day and move on. But daylight is a gift we receive again and again without having earned it.

Light lets us see the path ahead. It gives shape to what was hidden. It reminds us that darkness is not permanent.

Psalm 27 begins with a stronger truth still: “The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear?”

David was not speaking about a pleasant morning or a view through the window. He was speaking about the Lord Himself. God was his light when the way ahead was unclear. God was his salvation when danger was real. God was the strength of his life when his own strength was not enough.

The light in the room is a small wonder. The Lord who gives light is the greater one.

What it shows us about God

God does not leave His people in darkness.

That does not mean believers never face uncertainty. It does not mean every hard question is answered immediately or every fearful circumstance disappears by morning. Scripture is far too honest for that.

But it does mean that the Lord is not absent in the dark.

He sees what we cannot see. He knows the way when we do not know it. He is present when the future looks foggy and the next step feels small. He does not merely send light from a distance. He gives Himself as light to His people.

Psalm 27:1 does not say that David had no enemies or no reasons to feel afraid. It says that fear did not have the final claim on him because the Lord was his light and salvation.

That is the difference.

Fear can speak loudly. It can rehearse every possible problem and make tomorrow feel heavier than it is. But fear is not God. It is not the ruler of the day. It does not get the final word.

The Lord is our light.

In Jesus Christ this becomes even clearer. Jesus called Himself the light of the world. He came into a dark world not merely to offer advice but to bring life, truth, forgiveness and hope. He shows us the Father. He exposes sin without abandoning the sinner. He leads those who trust Him out of darkness and into life.

The Lord who lights the morning sky is also the Lord who shines into the human heart.

Lift your eyes

The next time morning light enters your room, let it slow you down for a moment.

You do not need to force a grand spiritual experience from it. You do not need to treat every sunbeam as a private message. But you can receive it as a good gift from the Creator and let it point you back to Him.

Thank the Lord that you are not required to carry the whole day in your own strength.

Thank Him that He already sees what is ahead. Thank Him that His presence does not depend on your mood. Thank Him that His mercy is not switched off when your confidence is low.

Then take the next faithful step.

Perhaps it is a conversation you have avoided. Perhaps it is work that needs doing. Perhaps it is a burden you need to hand back to the Lord. Perhaps it is simply getting out of bed and meeting the day with a quieter heart.

The Lord does not always show us the whole road. Often He gives enough light for the next step.

That is enough because He is enough.

The light in the room will fade by evening. But the Lord does not.
