The God Whose Word Stands Forever

The small wonder

Some things look permanent until they are not.

A building stands for decades then one day there is scaffolding around it. A public opinion feels settled then the wind changes. A trusted institution becomes shaky. A name once spoken with admiration is forgotten. A trend arrives with all the confidence of a marching band then disappears like a cheap umbrella in a storm.

The world is full of withering things.

Isaiah gives us a picture we can all understand.

Grass withers.

Flowers fade.

Even beauty has a season. Even strength has a limit. Even the things that seem fresh, impressive and full of life cannot hold themselves in place forever.

But then comes the contrast.

The word of our God stands forever.

Not for a mood. Not for a generation. Not until the next clever argument comes along. Forever.

God’s Word does not age the way human confidence ages. It does not lose its force because the world becomes noisy. It does not bend because the culture changes its mind. It stands because the God who speaks it stands.

What it shows us about God

God is faithful in what He says.

He does not speak carelessly. He does not promise more than He can deliver. He does not discover later that events have become too complicated for His purposes. His Word carries His own character. Because God is true, His Word is true. Because God is eternal, His Word endures.

This is a great mercy.

Imagine living in a world where nothing final had been spoken. No sure promise. No firm command. No trustworthy warning. No settled hope. Only opinion, appetite, fashion and fear.

That would not be freedom.

It would be fog.

God has not left us in fog. He has spoken. He has revealed His holiness, His mercy, His judgement, His grace and His saving purpose. He has shown us who we are. He has shown us who He is. Most wonderfully, He has shown us His Son.

The Word that stands forever leads us to the Saviour who is forever faithful.

This means Scripture is not a museum piece.

It is living truth from the living God. It corrects us when we drift. It comforts us when we are weary. It humbles us when we grow proud. It steadies us when the age loses its mind and pretends confusion is wisdom. God’s Word stands.

Lift your eyes

You may feel the instability of the world around you.

The news changes by the hour. Technology moves faster than wisdom. Public morals shift like sand. People speak with great certainty about things they had never considered ten minutes ago. It can leave the heart tired and the mind crowded.

Do not build your soul on withering grass.

Open the Word that stands.

Read it slowly. Receive it humbly. Let it challenge what needs challenging. Let it comfort what needs comforting. Let it train your desires rather than merely decorate your thoughts.

You do not need to chase every voice.

You need to hear the voice of the Lord.

His Word will outlast every empire, slogan, fear and fashion. It has steadied saints in prison cells, sickrooms, kitchens, churches, fields and ordinary Tuesday mornings. It has carried the fearful through the valley. It has called sinners home. It has lifted weary eyes to Christ.

Grass withers.

Flowers fade.

God’s Word stands forever.

That is not just doctrine. That is shelter.
