The God Whose Wisdom Runs Deep

The small wonder

Some things make sense only when we see more of the picture.

A child sees the needle but not the healing. A traveller sees the detour but not the collapsed bridge ahead. A gardener sees the pruning but knows the fruit will come later. From close up, many wise things can look severe, confusing or unnecessary.

Our view of life is often close up.

We see the immediate problem. The unanswered question. The closed door. The slow change. The thing we prayed would happen quickly that has not happened yet.

Then Scripture lifts our eyes.

“Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God!”

That word depth matters.

God’s wisdom is not a thin puddle we can step through and measure with our own cleverness. It is an ocean. His judgements are unsearchable. His ways are past tracing out. He does not think small thoughts. He does not make panicked decisions. He does not work from partial information.

He sees the end from the beginning.

He knows every hidden thread.

He never has to revise His purposes because something escaped His notice.

What it shows us about God

God is wise in all He does.

That does not mean His ways are always easy for us to understand. Often they are not. If we are honest, some providences leave us silent. Some seasons raise questions that cannot be tidied up with a slogan. Some answers come slowly. Some do not come in the way we hoped.

But the glory of God is not measured by how quickly we understand Him.

He is not wise only when His ways are immediately obvious to us. He is wise because wisdom belongs to Him by nature. He does not borrow counsel. He does not sit under the instruction of another. No one has been His adviser. No one has had to point out the thing He missed.

This humbles our pride.

Modern life has trained us to act like expert commentators on everything before morning tea. We scroll, react, judge and declare. But before the living God, the wise heart learns reverence. We are not large enough to put God in the dock and demand that He explain Himself on our timetable.

Yet His wisdom is not cold.

The God whose ways are past tracing out has revealed Himself in mercy. Most wonderfully, He has shown His wisdom at the cross. What looked like defeat became salvation. What looked like shame became glory. What looked like the end became the victory of God.

The cross teaches us this: God’s wisdom may confound us before it comforts us.

But it never fails.

Lift your eyes

You may be facing something you cannot understand.

A delay. A disappointment. A family burden. A door that has closed. A prayer that seems to circle the same ground. A season that feels more tangled than you expected.

Do not pretend you can see the whole design.

You cannot.

That is not meant to insult you. It is meant to free you. You are not God. You are not required to hold every reason in your hands before you can trust Him. You are called to bring your questions to the One whose wisdom runs deeper than your sight.

Ask Him for wisdom.

He invites that.

Ask Him to teach you what obedience looks like today. Ask Him to guard you from bitterness, fear and foolish shortcuts. Ask Him to keep you faithful while you wait for more light.

Some of God’s ways may not make sense to us until glory.

But none of them are foolish.

None are careless.

None are random.

The God who rules all things is not improvising.

He is wise. He is good. He is faithful. That is enough ground for today’s step.
