The God Whose Faithfulness Reaches Every Generation
The Lord is good. His loving kindness endures and His faithfulness continues through every generation.
Psalm 100:5 (sense of the passage)
The small wonder
Psalm 100 is a summons to joyful worship. It calls all the earth to make a glad sound before the Lord, to serve Him with gladness and to come into His presence with singing. The psalm does not begin with a list of everything that has gone well in our lives. It begins with the One who is worthy of praise.
At its close, the psalm gives three reasons for this gladness: the Lord is good, His loving kindness endures and His faithfulness continues through every generation (Psalm 100:5). These are not passing moods in God. They are the settled character of the One who made us and calls His people His own.
Generations come and go. We inherit stories, photographs, prayers and sometimes the burdens of those who came before us. Our circumstances change and the world we once knew may become difficult to recognise. Yet the Lord does not grow old with His creation or become less faithful as the years pass.
That is the wonder of this verse. The God whom one generation trusted is not exhausted by the needs of the next. His goodness is not a limited supply and His faithfulness has no expiry date.
What it shows us about God
The Lord's goodness means more than that He gives us pleasant experiences. He is good in Himself. His wisdom is pure, His purposes are holy and His character cannot be corrupted. When He gives a good gift we see something of the Giver. When His providence is difficult to understand His goodness has not ceased to be true.
The psalm also speaks of His enduring loving kindness. In the language of Scripture this is not mere sentiment. It is the steadfast mercy of the covenant-keeping God. He does not forget His promises when His people are weak. He remains faithful even when we have little strength to bring before Him.
Psalm 100 first calls us to acknowledge that the Lord made us and that we belong to Him. Its language of sheep and pasture reminds us that worship is the response of creatures who are cared for. We do not make ourselves His shepherd. He is the Shepherd who knows His flock.
The gospel shows the depth of that care. The Father sent His Son, the good Shepherd, who laid down His life for the sheep and rose again. At the cross God did not set aside His holiness to become merciful. His righteousness and His saving love were displayed in Jesus Christ. Forgiveness is not a reward for belonging to a respectable family or keeping up a religious tradition. It is received by grace through faith in the Saviour.
Because Christ lives, the faithfulness praised by the psalm is not merely a memory of better days. It is a present ground for confidence and a future hope. The Lord Jesus remains the same and His promises do not weaken with the passing years.
Lift your eyes
Perhaps you can remember an older Christian whose quiet trust helped you. Perhaps you are now the older person and wonder what you can give to those following behind. Psalm 100 directs both generations away from themselves and towards the Lord. We cannot hand down saving faith as though it were an heirloom. We can tell the truth about the God who is faithful and pray that those who hear will trust Christ for themselves.
Nor must we pretend that every family story is happy. Some have known estrangement, grief or years in which faith was not taught at home. The Lord's goodness does not depend upon a perfect family history. His grace reaches people who have no spiritual inheritance to boast about.
Today you may worship with a strong voice or with a heart made tired by sorrow. The psalm's invitation is for you too. Gladness before God is not the denial of pain. It is the recognition that His goodness is larger than the troubles of one season.
Lift your eyes beyond the passing years. Give thanks for mercies already received. Entrust the people you love to the Lord. Above all, rest your hope in Jesus Christ rather than in your own ability to keep everything together. The God who has been faithful through the generations will never cease to be good.
A few Scriptures to carry

Deuteronomy 7:9 — The Lord is the faithful God who keeps covenant and loving kindness.
John 10:11, 27–29 — Jesus is the good Shepherd who gives His life and keeps His sheep.
Hebrews 13:8 — Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.
A short prayer
Faithful Father, I praise You for goodness that does not fade and mercy that is not exhausted. Thank You for the people through whom I first heard Your Word and for the grace You have shown me in Christ. Forgive me when I trust the strength of my own plans more than Your promises. Teach me to worship with gratitude, to speak faithfully of Jesus to those who follow and to rest in Your steadfast love through every season. Amen.
Generations pass. The goodness and faithfulness of the Lord endure.
