The God Who Orders Our Days

My times are in your hand.

The small wonder

There is a quiet steadiness in those five words.

David wrote them in a season of real distress. He was surrounded by enemies. He felt forgotten and broken like a shattered vessel. His life was under threat. Everything felt uncertain and outside his control.

And yet, in the middle of that prayer, he says something that is not a coping strategy or a piece of positive self-talk. It is a theological statement about the structure of reality.

My times are in your hand.

Not partly. Not the important parts only. Not the big decisions while the small details drift loose. My times. The whole of my life, with its seasons and days and hours and ordinary routines and unexpected turns, is in the hand of God.

This is not a resigned shrug at fate. It is confident trust in a personal God who knows, who governs and who holds.

What it shows us about God

Time is not a neutral container that simply passes regardless of anything.

God made time. He established the rhythms of day and night, of seasons and years. He set the sun and the moon to govern them. He ordained the Sabbath as a weekly reminder that life has a shape given by the Creator and not invented by the creature.

Every morning that arrives is an appointment, not an accident. Every season of life, including the quiet ones, the monotonous ones and the ones that feel like nothing is happening, is within the knowledge and governance of the Lord.

Psalm 139 tells us that all of David's days were written in God's book before any of them came to be. That is a remarkable claim. Not that God observed them from a distance as they unfolded. But that He knew them, numbered them and held them before they existed.

This does not remove human responsibility or make choices meaningless. It means that behind every human day there is a God who is not surprised by it, who has not lost track of it and who is working in it for purposes larger than we can see at the time.

The routine Tuesday. The long waiting season. The year that seemed to pass without landmark. The slowly unfolding decade of quiet faithfulness. All of it is in His hand.

That is not a small comfort. It is a very large one.

Lift your eyes

Think about where you are in life right now. Not where you wish you were. Where you actually are.

This season, with its particular shape and texture and pace, is not outside God's knowledge. He is not confused about what year it is or what stage of life you are in. He is not waiting for things to become more interesting before He pays attention.

He holds your times.

Whatever is in front of you today, give it to Him. Not as a transaction but as an act of trust. Say, in whatever words come, that your times are in His hand and that you are glad they are.

Then go and do the day that is in front of you.

A short prayer

Lord, my times are in Your hand. Thank You that You are not surprised by this season. Thank You that the days I am living have not slipped outside Your knowledge or Your care. Help me to trust You with the shape of my life, with its routine and its uncertainty, its busy stretches and its quiet ones. Help me to be faithful today, in this day, for You. Amen.

The days are not drifting loose. Your times are held by the God who made them.
