The God Who Is Our Dwelling Place
Lord, you have been our dwelling place for all generations.
Psalm 90:1
The small wonder
Most of us know the comfort of a familiar place.
A chair that has taken the shape of years. A kitchen where the light falls the same way each morning. A front door whose sound tells us we are home. Places matter because they hold memory, safety and belonging.
Moses reaches for that language when he speaks about God.
“Lord, you have been our dwelling place for all generations.”
Israel knew what it was to live without a settled home. Their story included tents, wilderness roads, exile and long seasons when the ground beneath them felt temporary. Yet Moses says there was a home deeper than geography.
God Himself was their dwelling place.
Before there was a temple, before there was a city and before there was a house to return to, the Lord was the place where His people could belong.
That is a quiet wonder worth carrying into the week.
What it shows us about God
God is not merely the One who gives His people shelter. He is their shelter.
Psalm 90 immediately lifts our eyes beyond human time. “Before the mountains were born, before you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.” Everything we call permanent is recent compared with Him.
Houses age. Cities change. Familiar places are renovated, sold or lost. Bodies weaken. Families move. Seasons that once seemed fixed become memories.
God does not.
The Lord who held His people in one generation remained their dwelling place in the next. He was not exhausted by their need or altered by the passing years. His faithfulness outlasted every tent they folded and every road they travelled.
For Christians this refuge becomes even more precious in Christ. Jesus tells His disciples to remain in Him. The New Testament speaks of believers being in Christ and Christ being in them. The language is relational, living and secure.
We do not simply receive directions from a distant God. Through Christ we are brought near to the Father. We are given a belonging that does not depend upon postcode, health, age or circumstance.
The God of everlasting years gives His people a home in Himself.
Lift your eyes
There are seasons when life can feel strangely unsettled even if our address has not changed.
The routines that once steadied us may shift. People we relied upon may no longer be near. Ageing can make familiar things feel less certain. A diagnosis, a retirement, a family change or an unanswered question can make the heart feel as though it is living out of boxes.
Psalm 90 does not tell us to pretend those changes do not hurt.
It reminds us that our deepest home was never held together by walls.
The Lord has been the dwelling place of His people from generation to generation. He remains so now.
You can come to Him with the instability you feel. You can rest your thoughts in His unchanging character. You can open His Word and remember that the God who kept His people through wilderness years is not confused by the season you are in.
In Christ you are not spiritually homeless.
You belong to the One who was God before the mountains were born and who will still be God when every earthly chapter has closed.
Let the heart come home to Him again.

A Short Prayer
Everlasting God, thank You that You have been the dwelling place of Your people through every generation. When life feels unsettled help me remember that my deepest home is in You. Keep me close to Christ. Steady me in Your unchanging character and teach my heart to rest beneath Your care. Amen.
The places around us may change but the everlasting God remains the dwelling place of His people.
