The God Who Does Not Change

The small wonder

Nearly everything around us changes.

Hair thins. Strength fades. Houses are repaired then repaired again. Public opinion moves like a shopping trolley with a bad wheel. Technology promises to simplify life then gives us fifteen new passwords and a nervous twitch.

Change is not always bad.

Children grow. Wounds heal. Seasons turn. New mercies arrive with the morning. But the constant movement of life can still leave the heart tired. We live among shifting things and eventually we feel the strain of it.

Then God speaks through Malachi.

“For I, the LORD, don’t change.”

That is not a cold statement about divine distance. It is a warm shelter for God’s people. The Lord does not become less faithful with time. He does not wake with a different character. His mercy does not sour. His holiness does not soften into carelessness. His promises do not lose strength through age.

God remains God.

That is glory worth beholding.

What it shows us about God

God’s unchanging nature is the ground beneath every promise He makes.

If God could change in His character, no promise would be safe. Mercy might become reluctance. Justice might become compromise. Holiness might become mood. Love might become fatigue. We would be left wondering which version of God we would meet today.

But Scripture gives us something better.

The Lord does not change.

He is not learning how to be wise. He is not improving with experience. He is not developing a better plan because the first one looked shaky. He is eternally Himself. Perfect in holiness. Perfect in goodness. Perfect in power. Perfect in faithfulness.

That humbles us.

We are changeable creatures. Our courage rises and falls. Our prayers burn brightly then flicker. Our obedience can be steady one day then sluggish the next. We are more easily influenced than we like to admit.

But God is not carried by the current.

His faithfulness to His people rests not on their steadiness but on His own unchanging character. That does not excuse drift or make obedience optional. It means repentance is safe because mercy has not changed. It means hope is sturdy because God has not changed. It means worship has a fixed centre in a world that keeps moving.

The Lord remains faithful because He remains Himself.

Lift your eyes

You may feel surrounded by change today.

Family changes. Health changes. Church changes. The country changes. The culture changes faster than wisdom can catch its breath. Even your own heart may not feel as firm as you wish it did.

Do not anchor your soul to what keeps drifting.

Anchor it to the Lord.

The God who was faithful to Abraham, Moses, David, Ruth, Mary, Peter and Paul is not a different God now. The God who kept His promises through centuries of waiting has not become unreliable in your generation. The God who gave His Son for sinners has not become stingy with grace this morning.

So bring Him your unsettled heart.

Tell Him what feels unstable.

Confess where you have trusted passing things too much.

Receive again the comfort of His unchanging faithfulness.

The world may revise itself every five minutes. God does not. His truth is not up for renegotiation. His mercy is not exhausted. His throne is not wobbling. His gospel is not ageing badly.

The Lord does not change and that is very good news for people who do.
