Overview
Second Timothy is Paul's final letter. Written from a Roman prison shortly before his execution, it is the most personal and moving of all his correspondence. Paul writes to Timothy with the urgency of a man who knows his time is short, calling his beloved son in the faith to courage, faithfulness and a firm grip on the gospel. The letter is at once a farewell, a charge and a testimony of a life spent in the service of Christ.
Authorship and background
Paul wrote this letter around AD 66–67 during a second Roman imprisonment, from which there would be no release. Unlike his earlier house arrest, this imprisonment was harsher, and Paul had been largely abandoned by those around him. Timothy was apparently still in or near Ephesus, and Paul longed to see him before the end. The letter is widely regarded as the most autobiographical of all Paul's letters.
Christ at the centre
The letter centres on the gospel as something entrusted, to be guarded and passed on. Paul urges Timothy to "remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my gospel" (2:8). This is the firm foundation when everything else is shaking. The famous passage on Scripture in chapter 3 — "All Scripture is God-breathed and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness" — is set in the context of a world that will grow harder and more hostile to the truth. The answer to that hostility is not cleverness or strategy but the preached word: "Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season."

Second Timothy is one of the most powerful books in the Bible to read when faith feels costly or lonely. Paul writes from a cold cell, largely abandoned, facing death — and his words overflow with confidence in Christ and calm certainty about the future. "I know whom I have believed and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him." That is not bravado but the testimony of a man who has tested the promises of God across decades of hardship and found them completely reliable.
