Joy for the morning
"It is good to proclaim your loving kindness in the morning and your faithfulness every night."
Psalm 92:2
New Here? Welcome.
Abide begins with today's Daily Pause but it is more than a daily devotion. Our desire is simple: to bless people with Scripture shaped encouragement and help them turn their hearts toward Christ. Wherever you are in the world, you are welcome to read, pause, pray and take the next quiet step with the Lord. Begin with today's Pause, follow the 28 day Series Guide or explore the wider Abide library when you are ready.
Abide In Hope And Hold Fast
Romans 15:13 (WEB)
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Today's Focus: This week I will anchor my hope in Christ, not in circumstances. I will remember what God has promised, and I will take one steady step of obedience even if I feel tired. I will bless one person with encouragement that points them to real hope.
Your Daily Pause
A short daily starting point for Scripture, reflection and prayer.
Reflection
As we wrap up Abide in Hope, it’s worth saying plainly what hope is and what it is not. Biblical hope is not wishful thinking. It is not crossing your fingers and hoping the week behaves itself. It is confidence rooted in God’s character and God’s promises. Hope is sturdy because it’s anchored in Someone, not something. Paul calls God “the God of hope.” That means hope isn’t a mood you manufacture, it’s a gift you receive. And look at the direction of the verse, God fills you with joy and peace “in believing”, not in controlling. Not in winning. Not in finally getting everything sorted. In believing. That is the quiet strength of hope, it grows where faith grows. If you have had a rough season, hope can feel risky. You can start to believe that expecting good is naïve. But Christian hope is not naïve because it does not deny suffering, it looks through suffering. It says, God is still God. Christ is still risen. The Spirit is still at work. My story is not finished. The world is not the judge of God’s goodness. Jesus is. Abiding in hope means we refuse two traps. The first is despair, the belief that nothing will change and nothing matters. The second is fantasy, the belief that if we just think positively enough, everything will go our way. Hope sits in the middle. It tells the truth about pain, and it tells a bigger truth about God. It is realistic and it is resilient. And that’s why Paul mentions “the power of the Holy Spirit.” Hope is not grit. Hope is not you clenching your jaw. Hope is spiritual strength. When you’re worn down, you don’t need a motivational speech, you need power from outside yourself. The Holy Spirit strengthens your inner man, steadies your mind, lifts your eyes, and gives you the ability to keep believing when you can’t see the outcome yet. So as this series closes, don’t just admire hope, practise it. Choose one promise of God and hold it like a lifeline this week. Speak it when anxiety rises. Pray it when fatigue whispers. Obey in small ways even when the results are unclear. Hope is not passive. Hope produces perseverance. It keeps you moving forward without pretending life is easy. And finally, hope is meant to overflow. “That you may abound in hope.” Not only for you, but through you. People around you are thirsty for steady words. Not slogans. Not panic. Not cynicism. The kind of hope that can say, “God is faithful. Keep going. You’re not alone.” If Abide in Hope has done anything, let it be this, a deeper reflex to look to Christ first, and a stronger habit of encouraging others with the same. --------------- Related Scriptures (for further reading) Hebrews 6:19 , Hope as an anchor for the soul Lamentations 3:21–24 , Hope in God’s mercies 1 Peter 1:3–5 , A living hope through Christ Psalm 42:11 , Speak hope to your own soul 2 Corinthians 4:16–18 , Fix your eyes on the unseen -------------- For the week ahead Anchor: Choose one promise of God, write it down, and read it morning and night this week. Obey: Take one small step you’ve been delaying, a call, an apology, a habit, a decision, and do it with quiet faith. Bless: Encourage one person who is struggling, and point them to Christ’s faithfulness rather than quick fixes.
Prayer
Father, You are the God of hope. Thank You for carrying me through this series and for the ways You have steadied my heart. Forgive me for the times I have slipped into cynicism, panic, or resignation. Fill me again with joy and peace in believing. Teach me to anchor my hope in Christ and not in circumstances. Holy Spirit, strengthen me to keep trusting when answers are slow. Help me to practise hope, to pray, to obey, to persevere, and to encourage others. Make my hope quiet and strong, not loud and fragile. Let it overflow in words and actions that bless those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
